Solid front engine mount !
« on: 05 December 2009, 02:38 »
Hi guys and gals,

Just had fitted an e-bay special, a solid front engine mount for £44! Having heard that there might be some serious issues with vibrations I keep the old one just incase I wanted to swap back! I must admit that I have had the engine balanced after a full rebuild, so mine does run smooth but with the new mount I have only the slightest extra vibration at idle and again at 3k rpm.

The gear changes, even at high rpm are very smooth and crisp and the usual engine slap is complety gone. Since I have a stainless  manifold the upgrade to solid mount also stops the extra strain.

I'm very happy, anyone else who is building a fast road/track car don't waste your money on the expensive "race" spec mounts, for the extra vibration you would get with them anyway it's not worth it!

(opinion is my own, no one paided me and any advice taken here is at your own risk )

I dont understand what you are saying?
Is it a Vibratechnics mount? Is it better than standard? If so, why?
Baz.

The one I purchased was similar too....

from a guy on ebay..... hmmmmm it might have been cheaper to get that one....  oh well. The vibratech one is not solid but very firm which tries to limit the 'excess' noise/vibrations to the cabin, the one I have fitted has no give, this means the engine doesn't move, making gear changes smoother during spirited driving . For track cars this is a cheap and decent upgrade, if yours is a daily... be warned it might be a little harsh.... if the misses drives it..... don't do it!! It's a compromise at the end of the day.

Interesting...

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

Further feedback on solid mounts, for anyone searching...

Just fitted one last night as an experiment to see if it removed a clunking noise. The noise started following the fitting of a 4 branch manifold (ashley), and only occurs briefely when pulling away in 1st gear.

Anyway, the noise is still there, but perhaps a little lighter. However, a further knocking/vibration occurs at just over 3k rpm in 3rd gear when accelerating hard.

Car is a digi 8v with a 266 deg camshaft, and ashley manifold. Vibratechnics gearbox mount, and G60 rear engine mount. Previously had a standard rubber front mount fitted. Fully pollybushed.

There is no noticable increase in vibration when driving, apart from the above mentioned in 3rd gear. Not found it anywhere else, but ive not driven it far yet. On idle when warm the difference is small, but on start up from cold there is a fair bit of extra vibration. Thanks to a broken clip on my grille, this was buzzing loudly on cold start, but eased a lot once warm.

Movement of the engine is reduced a lot, it all feels very stable and smooth.

Dont know if its staying on yet, need to find the source of this noise. The manifold looks like its touching a cover over the off side drive shaft, and its very close to the steering rack, so i'll need to investigate further to find whats making the noise
