Loud squealing when starting from cold....2nd air pump thingy?

Got this problem with my 98 20v turbo, when i start it cold the car starts fine as always, runs for 30 secs then i get this loud squealing for about 20 secs, doesnt help if i rev it (thought maybe a wet belt) so all i thought it could be is this secondary pump thingy but i cant find anything in tne maintenanace section.

any ideas or useful links lads?

Get somebody to turn the key while you stand near the engine, bonnet open, and tell us which side of the engine the noise is from.

starter? oo didnt think of that, it has been sticking slightly.

To fix it take starter motor off and strip and grease well. There's a guide on here some where hth

Wont be starter if its sqealing after you've started it and its been running 30 seconds. Sounds like the aircon pump, have you got climate control on your var or air-con. My pump squeals sometimes when i first turn the climate control on, is the pump bearings apprently running dry.

the joys of the VAG cars mate, great when there working ok but seem to go through stages of everything breaking

It won't be secondary air pump on a 98 car as they weren't fitted then! It is your starter. Mine does it now and again after firing up. You can take the starter apart and grease it up. I saw a link to it somewhere on one of the forums.
