had trouble starting mine today i think it was just damp in the electrics

so try giving your electrics a spray with WD40 worked a treat for me today

if its making a clicking sound tho,  i would guess you have flattened the battery, give it a good charge overnight and try again in the morning

I had a similar probblem with my mk1 a while ago. it would start when it wanted too, one day it would work fine and the next the starter wouldnt turn the engine over at all.
And what the problem was with mine is that there was a bad contact between the starter motor and the big starter cable , i just put a new spade conneter on and it started fine.

Did you change the bell housing bush when you changed the starter?

Battery's dont like the cold.  Could just be thats its gone south for the winter.  I thought my battery lost all charge the other night it only just turned over with no start, warmed up a bit the next day and cranked perfectly. See if a jump start helps then your know its the battery.  Other than that the short connector between the motor and solenoid might be a bit loose

Check that your earth connections are clean and tight.
