Can I remove this scratch from headlight lense?
« on: 30 November 2009, 13:31 »
I have sustained a relatively deep scratch to my MkVI headlight lense and was wondering if anyone knew of a product designed specifically for this kind of repair job (filler, resin..?). I think it's too deep to polish out, but any advice/pointers would be most welcome.

TIA :)

Without seeing it myself it's hard to say if it will polish out or not. I've e-mailed Planetpolish for you, they could hopefully have a product to help you out, i'll let you know as soon as they get back to me.

A while ago someone posted a link to Detailing World with a how to on removing scratches from plastic lenses. I seem to remember they got some pretty big scratches and chips out relatively easily.

depends how deep this scratch is... does your fingernail catch in it?

Thanks for your input, guys. Thanks for your help  The scratch can definitely be felt with my fingernail, in fact I can feel it more than I can see it, if you get my drift. It would be nice just to be able to polish it out, but I'd be a bit worried that I would cover the lense in swirl marks. The scratch isn't that bad and I can live with it if necessary. It just seems a pity to have got it when the car is only 4 months old.

I'm sure this stuff will help reduce the visual impact and make it less noticeable :

I'd use it with a machine polisher if you can but don't let it get too hot

Thanks. I may be wrong, but I don't think it can be polished out (too deep). I was wondering if I could use some of that resin stuff they repair cracked windscreens with?
