Negative attention on the road
« on: 27 November 2009, 17:04 »
Only had my GTi for 3 weeks and already clocked up 1000 miles. Very, very impressed with it so far.

Have noticed a trend from other cars who tailgate inches from my bumper. I don't know if they are wanting a closer look or are challenging for a scrap.

Not the usual bored photocopier rep in his diesel Audi / BMW either. All sorts, delivery vans, Smart cars, houewives on school run, old men in Lagunas.

I had a Clio 182 when they first came out and the same thing happened then.

Anybody else experienced this ?

No but did have a mk5 gti chasing me up the A19 the other day. I was doing about 100-110mph and pulled across to the inside lane but he didn't want to pass. He just wanted to stay behind me.

What car did you have before? Reason I ask is it's just possible the rear window is shallower/bottom edge is higher up on the GTI giving the impression of cars behind being closer than they were before. Or maybe it's psychological because you have a new car. Or maybe I am talking poo again...

No did consider that so good question.

Previous car was MarkV Golf GT TDi 4 Motion which was totally ignored as is my other current car which is an ML420.

I was going to ask what colour it was and maybe that was the reason but i see its black so its not like a shouting white or red. No idea why unless the speedos about as acurate as the mk5 one in which case your probably doing well below the speed limit and that maybe why.

Pull over, let them past.

Then follow them with all of your lights on, fogs as well.
Annoying as hell.
(Not too close of course that would be bad manners and illegal.)

They see the badge and try it on.

If they get silly then back out - it ain't worth it.

I had a c0ck in a Mitsi Evo Lancer tonight driving from Devon to Dorset, I was behind a Scirocco and he obviously fancied his chances with us both. He did a stupid overtake on me and then tried it on with the roc but couldn't get past. I stayed with him for twenty miles before I couldn't keep up with him as we hit a bit of dual carraigeway.

Before you all feel dismayed, I was in my vito van!

People tailgating is a major annoyance, as is people going too slow, which is ironic, as then I become a pseudo tailgater.

I don't know if people would be able to see the gti badge from a distance and from the rear, the GTI isn't that different to most other Golfs to the un-trained eye.
