Good link.

Surely the fogs & headlights is covered by:

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

At night I wouldn't say visibility is reduced.

James

  so fog never happens at night?

I hate foglights.  People constantly use them when there's no need, especially front fogs.

As a guide I use rear foglights if I'm out in the country and it's foggy.  If I wind up with someone behind me who can clearly see me, I'll turn off the rear fogs, to avoid dazzling them.  If it gets so foggy I really can't see sh*t and I have front fogs I switch to sidelights + front and rear fogs (when no-one is behind me).

I *may* be wrong, but I seem to recall that best practice is to use front fogs with sidelights only.  If you try it you'll find it genuinely works better in fog that is heavy enough to warrant front foglights.  This is because they light up the periphery rather than all of the water droplets directly in front of you.

Following this, it's my view that not all foglight switches allow you to use the correct configuration of foglights for the occasion.  Bear in mind that different EU countries have different rulings for this sort of thing, so the country the car is built in may set up the switch to work incorrectly for the UK.

At night I wouldn't say visibility is reduced.

That really is an outstandingly 'tarded thing to say.

It would be technically illegal to have both front and rear fogs coming together.
You are not allowed to use rear fogs at night. And front fogs at night if it isnt foggy!

Sorry, but you're talking sh*t, Len.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

This is correct!

Rear fog lights dazzle at night and even in fog are not necessary!

Following this, it's my view that not all foglight switches allow you to use the correct configuration of foglights for the occasion.  Bear in mind that different EU countries have different rulings for this sort of thing, so the country the car is built in may set up the switch to work incorrectly for the UK.

Is the Mk3 a good example of this then?

If you pull the switch out once, you have front fog lights, if you pull the switch out twice, you have front & rear fog lights.

You say that there's no need for people to use front foglights when it's not foggy, but, if they have their rear fogs switched on, on a country road, like you explained, then the front fogs are also switched on, as there's no way of switching them off without switching off the rear ones at the same time.

I think I've explained this as best as I can so hope you understand.

Either way it's a crap idea :nerd:

Yes it it, most cars now have them on separate switches and I think that is to do with the eu.

A Traffic cop told me this a long time ago but have never seen it written down. I wasnt being pulled at the time, came up in conversation.
