Evening chaps!

I serviced my mk4 1.8T around March time, this included replacing the oil filter and oil completely.  Since then I've done 4/5k in the car, and expect to have done about 6k by March next year.  Having regularly checked the oil (which I filled to the full line of the dipstick) I've noticed the car has used absolutely no oil, well none so as could be detected from a drop on the dip stick level.  It isn't even that dirty looking either.

Question is, is it worth replacing ever 12 months, or should I just keep the same oil for longer, say 18 months or whatever?  Or given I do half the average mileage a year, would every 2 years be a stupid suggestion?

Oil absorbs water which is why they recommend you change it every year regardless of mileage. Some of the newer synthetic oils state longer change times but you pay twice as much for them.

 on my car i would do oil change at least once a year mate, i find in my kr the oil starts to turn to a very dark brown around the 5k mark but i am following the rebuild instructions on changing every 5k, on yours i would do once a year or every 10k which ever is sooner, so if you havent reached the 10k by next march do the change then.

on my motor cycle i do it by service miles every 6k so this year i havent even reach 2k since last change so ill leave it as is but come next spring ill do oil and filter as that would be 18months

my car engine doesnt use any oil either and i hope frequent changes with good quality oil wiil keep it that way

I would change the oil every 12months mate regardless of the mileage  :smiley:

on me m/cycle mate i 'know' the motor and as it hsnt been used this year except for running to temp im certain an oil change in the spring will be ok, i hope to be converting it to speed triple to get more usage out of it as im getting on a bit now and then can continue on its 6k service intervals  :wink:
