PLEASE HELP!!!Mk3 transmission problem!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Just bought a mk3 1.4. Making evil sounds(probably cos it's LOOOOW), the powersteering hasn't been working, checked fluid etc and all ok, then started it up tonight and the powersteering started working WITH AVENGANCE!! REAL light, spin full lock with one finger while stationary, feels like there's nothing there!! Made a loads grinding sounds then was fine, apart from there's one hell of a dead zone, probably quarter of a turn each way, you can feel the steering almost rattling to each side of the dead zone. THEN IT STOPPED AGAIN! please help as I think this could be real dangerous!! It's going up on ramps on thur so

is there anything to look for/check.
What the process of faultfinding the PAS.

The powersteering problem could be your belt slipping.

if its making noises the flud might need replacing.

Username has kinda stuck over the years, always suprises me that it's never been used in the forums etc I join. Obvious easy name.
Sometimes I need a bit of help to keep the cars working too!
