My car loves winter

Odd, but I've found my runs so much better now its cold! It starts instantly, and I mean instantly - it doesn't even crank, it just fires whenever its cold. The idle hunting is pretty much minimised to nothingness, oil burning is reduced and fuel economy is better.

Its really odd, but the whole car is completely different to drive in winter, its fine anyway, but in Winter, its spot-on!

But it leads me to ask, why is it so good in winter!?

Some people say that cold air is better because it's more dense and so there's more oxygen, which makes a car run better. I have no idea if that is actually true though! That said, cars do have 'cold' air intakes don't they so there must be something in it?

I have thought my golf enjoys the cold but I don't know if it's just my imagination.

I have more problems with hot starts - my car dies after about 10 seconds if I start it when it is hot. I have to restart and then it is fine!

Never managed to find out why, and it's done it the whole time I've had it (40k miles now, ticked over 170k at the weekend!

Cold starts, not a problem at all starts perfectly (providing the battery isn't flat as it normally is!!)

Ha ha I thought it was just me so havent mentioned it but mine has been running a lot smoother recently for no apparent reason. Mine is filthy at the moment and at one point thought that my car ran better dirty!!! :grin:

Mine likes the cold. If i dont start it for a day or two it starts almost before i turn the key!

Not that there is more oxygen as the ratios of gasses remain the same. But cold air is more dense, so you get more weight into the engine. Car engines also like the fog as it is a crude way of water injection. So cold foggy mornings are ideal for cars. (so long as you don't have damp starting issues) Shame you can't see where you are going in fog! :undecided:
