Mk2 GTI, Tornado Pink & Flaking lacquer
« on: 24 November 2009, 14:59 »
Hi,

Just acquired a nice little Mk2 Golf GTI 8v. Unfortunately, it is turning rapidly pink, and there are several spots across the body where the clear coat lacquer is flaking off - including a large part of one of the wings, where the clear coat is completely gone.

Is this fixable without a full respray? If not, what kind of costs would I be looking at?

Any advice gratefully received!

You could cut the paint back to red - T-Cut might work by hand otherwise you'll need a machine. The flaking cannot be corrected and may require removing and reapplying.

recommend you find someone who is handy with a machine polisher... you can always give it a go and if you don't get any results then move onto thinking about re-spray etc

it is possible though http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=122448.0

correct^

paint with no clearcoat oxydises fairly quickly if not sealed and waxed, the paint becomes pitted/pourus due to a mixture of uv damage which ages the paint and contaminents bond and attack the paint causing it to loose colour and eventually cracking and failing.

guys polo detail thread is a perfect example.

you reckon just plain ol t-cut? always thought it was too abrasive for a machine polisher.

there are a lot better ans safer polishes to use on the market  than just t-cut

I have 2 tornado red mk2's, and over the years I have tried everything. The best method I've found is to use Colour-magic every few weeks. The only permanent solution is a respray.

I had mine machine polished. Looked good for a short while but soon returned to pink! it was probably too far gone though to start with.

what was it sealed and waxed with after it was machined?? sealent and wax play a very big part in it lasting and not oxydising.
