Air Flow Sensor

Hi Guys,

Just a quick one.  I had a remap performed by R-Tech about 18months ago on my MkIV GTI-T ,which has been great.  Although for the last couple of months the turbo or what I thought was the turbo has been stuttering whilst accelerating in third and fourth.

Anyway I took my car in for a service yesterday and they told me that the air flow meter/sensor was about knackered.  They fitted another one yesterday and this went faulty within 5 mins of their test drive.  They are fitting another one today when it gets delivered too them but I was concerned/wondering could my remap cause the new air flow sensor to blow and be the cause of the issue with my old one too?

remap won't cause your air flow sensor to blow

dodgey wiring / poor connection is the most likely cuplrit

Cheers.  Could the ECU not be flowing an increased current through the air flow sensor or am I way off the mark???

no - the ECU relies on information from the air flow sensor to adjust the fuel mixture 

All the air flow sensor does is sit behind your airbox and measure the amount of air passing through

Hello.

Are they 100% sure its a MAF fault?  (Just drive the car with the MAF disconected, if the car feels smoother then its 90% MAF related)
Did a fault code pop up? (Its rare a MAF will bring up a fault code)
Did they do MAF data logging? (takes around5 mins to do, a good run in 3rd from 1500rpm to 6500rpm)

If it is a MAF fault only use OEM Bosch units or the Bosch recon units, 3rd patry units can be pants.

If it was the mapping the ecu would have killed the MAF on the day you got your remap.

They said that they tested it by swapping in a MAF sensor from another car and that it worked fine.  Just that they then installed a new MAF sensor and that it failed.  I guess this could just be a faulty MAF straught out the box.

When I was driving the car prior to the service, not once did a fault code pop-up.

I've no idea if they perform data logging, the guy that rang said that after fitting the new MAF, prior to it failing, the car went like stink...

The garage is Lion garage VW specialist based in Loughborough.  Think they also have one close to Hinckley.

We know the guys from Lion garage Hinckley, v.good bunch of lads and know there stuff when it come to VAG.

Its commom you get naff MAF straight out of the box. If one from another car worked then imo dud maf out the box.
