if your going to get the aa out they will be able to tell for sure if its the head gasket or not. in my experience you get a puff of white smoke out your exhaust not steamy windows!!! take the oil filler cap off and check for what looks like mayonaise around it, you can also see this on the dipstick, thats a sure fire way of telling. you can also smell it in the coolant and the aa should be able to test the coolant for contamination. not to put a downer on the whole situation but how much??? i've done my head gasket had the lot off, skimmed and back up and running in a day! first time i've tried anything like it as well so god knows what thier hourly rate must be.

good luck all the same, and don't go selling it just yet!!

When the head gasket went on my old Pegueot (French piece of $hit..!) I used to be able to see it dripping water whilst the engine was running but getting on my hands and knees and taking a look under the front bumper.

My current valver is in having the cams, ported head and inlet done (it been with my mechanic 2 weeks and feels like 2 months.....!)

Any advise on how I should bed it in once this work has been complete.....? i.e. not take it over 4,000 rpm til I've done 1000 miles or sommink along those lines.... ???

Well I got the garage to come collect the car and after looking he's said that it was just the flange on the top of the radiator, last time the hose blew off it took a load of the flange with it. I did point this out to them when the gasket was being fitted but they reckoned it'd be alright. Either way its in having a new radiator fitted and I get it back Monday! Phew!
