Well having lot's of luck now, why does everything break at once? So my driver electric window has just died (luckily when it's up!) and I'm fairly sure it's the motor so should be ok doing this, anyone reccomend where to get a new one from? GSF, scrappy's etc?

Also because I've got a 5 door how can I convert the rear windows from manual to electric? I know I'll need the motors and wiring, anyone got a step by step to doing this?

Front lifter with motor is quite pricey new.. though I can quote on a valeo unit.. its still quite pricey..  really selling tihs arent I

There are some on Ebay unless you can find one in the scrappy. There is a difference between the quality of the ones you get on Ebay though. I learnt the hard way - I went for the cheap one and it was poor quality, shaky when operated and broke within a month.

Expensive I know, but the guy claims it's made by the same company who made them for VW. Whether that's true or not, it works perfectly and has done for the last 6 months.

£59 for the good one, with £10 postage, or he's in Huddersfield if you want to collect. The trader is actually Dubbers VW, who have a decent reputation.

Cheap one is £36 with £6 postage

I have fitted a pair of Dubbers motors and mechs - you can tell by the weight of the motor and the rigidity of the lifter rail that they are top quality. £59 is an excellent price.

So once I get the door card off has anyone got any troubleshooting ideas? I imagine it's the motor, it's alwats been slower than the passenger side and recently has been a little on and off about working. Both front windows run off one fuse right?

Also is it an MOT fail to have a driver side window not able to open because of this?

If it was running slow, and now has stopped altogether, chances are that it's now burnt out and will need replacing  You could detach the window from the mech, and try running the mech on its own - if it's still working it should move okay without the weight of the window. I guess there's also a chance that there's a broken wire somewhere, so check that power is getting to the motor.

If the mech is still working, grease up the runner, and ensure that the window moves up and down in a straight line (no tilting/slanting under operation). There are some nuts in there iirc which allow you to adjust the angle at which the window operates on the runner, however it could be that the plastic guides on the runner have worn.
