Big wheels n dodgy steering racks...
« on: 07 October 2004, 15:22 »
Hi all,
Finally bought meself a mk1, needs work on it but should be a nice first project.
Had it checked over in my garage and theyve said i need a new steering rack, even though the previous owner recently replaced it. I was told that havin 15 wheels on may be a cause of the problem or the steering rack itself is faulty.
Has anyone come across this problem before? theres major give on both sides of the rack. Any info would be great, also is GSF the best place to get a new rack? or do they tend to be cheap and cheerful?

Cheers

Lewis.

Hi Lewis,

15" wheels are no bother and def not the problem. If the garage are telling you that I wouldn't trust their opinion on the steering rack!

If you do need one, give Stuart at EuroCarParts Leeds branch a ring, he sorts out some great prices if you mention this site - his contact details are in the deals and discounts section

Yeh,
Finally is the word. Pretty chuffed with it, apart from the steering issue. I've had two garages opinions on it and both are pulling up issues with the rack. Thinking there's a possibility the previous owner was supplied a faulty rack.

Apart from that Rick, it's in decent condition, bits of bodywork need sortin but so far that seems to be it(fingers crossed) I'll get sum pics to you soon. Just waitin for jens camera, oh and i take it you've heard?  ;)

Maybe worth taking your car to a tyre shop rather than a garage. I've found lately (esp. with the independant guys) that they are surprisingly knowledgeable on steering, suspension etc. Might be they can shed some light on it.

Really don't see 15" wheels being the problem. Like you said, could be faulty rack. You got the reciept for it? Other option is trying to adjust the rack on at the steering gear although access to it in situ will be crap! ;)

Yeh receipts are on the way from the last owner, sposed to be a min. 3 month warranty on the rack so i'll see what i can sort out, then if not, prob take it to a tyre specialist like u say.

Cheers.
