Belt broke VR6
« on: 22 November 2009, 01:40 »
Guys,

Sitting in traffic jam today when engine cut out, followed by heavy rattling noise & alot of smoke. Looked under bonnet & found ribbons of a belt hanging loose below driver side. Is this the serpentine belt that drives all... water pump, ac, alternator etc?
What I want to know is what damage could have been done? Like I said, alot of smoke & heavy rattling noise also. Could there be any damage to the engine? I think the timing chain is ok as the cams were still turning.
Car is a 97 VR6 with 99k

Cheers

it shouldn't have done much damage, it might be your tensioner that has caused the belt to snap, check that the alternator etc spin freely then rplace the belt.

Yeh pretty much, turns over for a second then cuts out after a loud clattering noise from around the alternator area. Only tryed it once as dont wanna do any damage but sounds like its too late.
If the crankshaft has seized & caused the belt to snap would that cause damage to teh pistons or anything else?

Cheers

Had a proper look this morning, the tensioner pulley was in bits... causing the belt to slip/break & it then wrapped itself around the crankshaft pulley causing it to stall I guess.

Well its the big car park in the sky for her... gutted!
