Hi guys, I bought a car a while back which was originally a 1.6 and had a 1.8 16v conversion done with twin 40 carbs. After poking around and reading up a bit I found that the dials in the car do not have the MFA display so Im not sure whats been done with the wiring. Is there any way to get that set of dials in the car?

Also I want to get rid of any unessesary wires as possible - I know that with Carbs I dont need certain sensors but is there a wiring diagram or anything that I can use to distinguish between what I need and what I dont?

Help is mucho appriciated.

for the clocks you need:
clocks
stalk
loom from stalk
oil & outside temp sensors, plus loom from them

the way to wire it in depends where your hazard switch is :)

as for the loom, basically all you need is the wiring from the ignition controller. and engien sensor wires.  Basically check your wiring, if anything isn't plugged in, chances are its not needed ;)

Perfect, the hazard switch is in front of the dials behind the steering wheel. How does that change things?

makes it easier! hazard switch locvation tells us what wiring you have in the car, CE1 or CE2.  You have CE2, which is more modular than CE1 :)

1st off the wiring from stalks to fusebox is on its own 4 pin loom, dead easy and available in loads of 90s VAG models, MK3, Corrado, Passat etc. Basically if its got hazard on column and the MFA it has loom you need :)

sensor wiring is more tricky, as you need to splice these wires to the G1 and G2 plugs, have a read of my fusebox FAQ :)

I've heard rumour of quite a few CE1 mk2s with hazard switches on the steering wheel column...  :lipsrsealed:

I've never seen such a thing (yet!). I've seen cars made in 1989 with the hazard switch on the column, but its still CE2, just one that was registered really quickly.
Its not a 1990 thing despite everyone saying things like '90spec', as MK2s were rolling off the production line with CE2 electrics in 1989.  Jettas more likely to see with this.
CE2 was around as early as 1988, since that's when topgear reviewed the Corrado.

I have also seen CE2 cars with a hazard switch on the dash, this was mainly seen in the US. The reason is due to the tilt column, the US CE2 MK2 with a tilt column, had the hazard switch on the dash.
Its also possible early US/Mexico built cars may have had the hazard on the column, as those were a special case. They were not CE1 though, they had their own fusebox!

For German built cars, CE1 = hazard on dash, CE2 = hazard on column (except for tilt equipped MK2s as above)
