Alloy help...
« on: 19 November 2009, 11:40 »
Looking at getting some 15" BBS RA's soon enough, but I'm confused by some of the terms. ET35 is the offset right?? But what is the offset?? Can it be higher/lower?? What difference will this make?? Also, 6J, is that the width of the alloy?? 'cause I'v seen some that are 9J, I'm assuming 6J is close to 195 width??

The offset is the distance in mm from the center line of the wheel to the hub mouting face. The lower the number, the further they stick out.

Standard wheels were 6J (6 inches wide) ET35 and were fitted with 185-55-15 tyres.

9J RA's? Never heard of them unless they are a BMW fitment? If they really are 9's you have found something very rare.

Sorry I didn't mean 9J RA's, I just meant 9J on a Golf, but I vaguely remember mention of them having to do some arch work...which I don't fancy doing lol. So I'm guessing 6.5J is 195 width?? I quite like the stance on mine with the 195 width alloys it has now, so might try and find them (I've seen a few, I'm guessing that is a standard measurement for RAs??

I've just been to check mine, and yes they are 6J ET35 with 185-55-15 tyres.

The tyres are pretty much in line with the face of the rims, whereas my last car with RA's had 195-50-15's and the tyres were slightly proud.

If the wheels on your sig are the ones that you are refering to, I would guess that they are 7J with 195 tyres. They seem to have a tiny amount of strech.

I wasn't referring to my alloys, but yea they'r sitting on 195 with no stretch as far as I'm aware, they sit flush with the edge of the alloy

Hey mate hows it going? Yea, still pretty much the same except for the dent in the back end

But getting a nice lil sum from the insurance company, getting a couple hundred to play with, so thinking of start to spruce her up. New grill, new lights, new alloys, but big stuff (paintjob, engine swap) won't come til after uni

It could well have been destined for the scrappy mate, you should have seen the MOT fail list haha but still I aint doing it to make a profit off of her...I'm doing it 'cause with a bit of TLC she could be a trusty old gal. The engine seized back in june/july'ish but since then, I've made it to Donnington and back, Aberystwyth (Wales) and back, and London and back multiple times. Hopefully she'll be on the road for another decade+ haha
