Dont know if this is any good to ye golfgal.
1) Drain the coolant via the lower radiator hose (spring clip, so large pliers or grips needed)
2) Disconnect the two water hoses running into the bulkhead(spring clips again, unbolt the ignition coil from the bulkhead to improve access)
3) Undo two 10mm nuts & rubber washers on the bulkhead behind the engine(long studs, one above the other) this holds the airbox in place
4) Remove front parcel shelf and drivers side lower dash piece
5) Remove gearnob/gaiter & centre console
6) You will now see a plastic unit with ducts, unscrew the two 10mm plastic nuts that secure it
7) pull out the middle dash vents(they just pop out carefully) look down the aperture, you will see that the plastic unit is stapled onto these. Prise the staples out with a screwdriver etc. Unscrew the vent housing and remove(makes refitting of the plastic unit so much easier)

Look underneath the dash, you will see that the plastic unit also attaches to piping running to the left & right vents. Pull & wriggle these pipes out. The plastic unit should now come out.
9) You will now see the main airbox unit. It has a rectangular duct attached underneath it. Remove the screw from the side of it and pull the duct out(this will help in getting the airbox out later)
10) Disconnect the cables from the operating levers and carefully prise off the clips that attach the cable sleeve to the airbox. There are 2 cables passenger side, and 1 drivers side)
11) On the passenger side, the blower fan duct connects to the airbox. Prise off the metal clips that hold this on(the clips are all the way round it section so some you wont be able to see)
12) The airbox should now pull out from the bulkhead(with lots of wriggling, the studs tend to catch on the bulkhead holes)
13) With the airbox out, remove the old matrix, transfering the foam gasket to the new matrix(V.Important!) clean the box and fit new matrix. Make sure all flaps/levers work ok.
14) Ensure you havent bent the studs while pulling the airbox out, this could make it hard to put back! Place the unit on the transmission tunnel, and connect the (drivers side)black control cable to its operating lever, and fit the retaining clip(it's very awkward with the airbox in its final postion!)
15) Offer the airbox back in, engaging the lower stud in its hole first. Wriggle the 'box around until the top stud enganges the hole. (If you have trouble get someone to direct you from the engine bay side! I had to use alot of force to lift the airbox up to get the top stud in) Refit the rubber washers & nuts in the engine bay.
16) the rest of the refitting is plain sailing. Prime the matrix with antifreeze/water mix. I used Jubilee clips to reconnect the matrix water pipes to save struggling with the spring clips.
17) Refill the system with proper VW antifreeze & distilled water. Run engine without expansion cap for a few mins to clear any remaining airlocks.
18) Enjoy a nice warm car!
