170,000+ Mile Bora 130 PD

Reet, as I'm looking for a newer car with big boot the wife and I are looking @ Bora's.

I've seen a nice Bora with over 170,000 miles for only £2.5k.

1.) I think this is a fair price for a 130PD, am I correct?
2.) What sort of things start breaking at this high mileage?
3.) Would a high mileage PD handle a remap?
4.) Should I look @ lower mileage engines or are these really bullet proof?

My Dad paid £2.7K for a 120,000 miler a year ago but I think he got a bargain.

I'd steer clear of a remap though unless it's had a new uprated clutch recently as a remap will cook an old one very quickly and they cost near enough £1K to replace!

A good service history is important as they are fussy about what oil is used in them.

If you want a big boot then buy a Passat! Its huuuuge!
Plus more common than a Bora so easier to get spares and tuning/styling parts.

Bora is an awesome car. All the great bits of the MKIV Golf in a better looking body with more space for less money.

My Dad's had 2 PD 130 Sports and he rates them amongst the best cars he has ever owned. Praise indeed from a man who's had a Lotus Elan S2, A lotus Cortina MKI, an Alfasud Ti, A Saab 900 Turbo Carlsson, a Alfa 155 Cloverleaf, a MKIII Golf VR6, Citreon BX19 GTI 16v, Jag X typre 2.0 TD, MG Badged Rover 75 TD (can never remember what they're called!) etc etc.

turbo, cam, boost hoses, intercooler (hi rhys!), clutch, engine mounts, bushes as well as the usual array of fiddly sensors that go wrong are likely to fail on you unless they've been replaced recently.. and thats without even touching it with a remap.

Your 2.5k car could easily end up costing you 4k upwards in total if it's a lemon. Proceed with caution and get it checked out properly before you hand over any cash.

It was £7k, but we've decided to be a bit more sensible and go for £2-£5k now, needs LOADS of space so a saloon/Estate/Sharan'esque(Zafira?).

I was going to get a 2006 Jetta, but we've changed our price range.

you can get a b5.5 passat estate for that money.. Ben's absolutely dwarfs my mk4 estate.
