GT TDI 6 speed queery?

I have been looking around at the gt tdi's and have seen one which is a 6 speed.  I presumed this would be only on the 150bhp version, however it seems its a 115bhp.  Is this right?  Did VW make 115 6 speeds?

May sound daft, but whats the advantage of the extra gear?  Is it mainly the 6th gear is a nice one for motorway cruising?

Also, is the 115bhp upto much?  Ive heard a quick remap is worth the beans.  Im not too fussed about rocketing everywhere, its just my mk3 gti 16v is drinking petrol and i was hoping to switch to a diesel, but keep some of that kick

mainly cruising but the ratios are a bit naff; i find myself short shifting around the box

Get a 130bhp or 150bhp if you like speed

Its the money issue which im fighting with at the moment im afraid.  Not got alot to play with, so will have to suck it up and enter at the lower end of the scale i think.  Unless i looked at a crazy high miler, but lets face it, they can be more troublesome than they're worth

Fair play.  The car (which inspired this thread) has 156k on it atm (motorway miles according to the seller)

Ive asked if it has service history and the usual questions.  Anything specific i should be looking out for?

there's a buying guide in the maintenance section - most of it applies to the diesels.

Check for excess smoke of the blue variety as that will signal a turbo on its last legs.  Do a clutch test - stick it in 4th at 30mph and floor it; will soon tell you if its knackered or not

Also checks it pulls well in all gears - lack of performance can signal worn lugs on boost pipes or possible MAF on its way out
