Leaking sunroof??
« on: 16 November 2009, 15:05 »
Hi, The carpets in the drivers and backseat (same side) footwells are soaking wet also the boot carpet on the same side which is causing my windows to really steam up! And i'm wondering if the probable cause would be the sunroof? Before i go spend £50 on a new sunroof seal i need to be sure its that. Thanks in advance.

I believe there will be drain holes, check them first.

But if its all one side and back to the boot I would look under the car and pull up the carpets!
It cant be heater as that would only get to front footwell.
With it being the boot as well thats like 5 different levels and water dont go uphill.

It's not half as bad in the boot as in the footwells. My guess is that it's coming from the o/s of the sunroof and draining down each pillow which makes the most sense to me. I shouldn't think its anything from the floor as i checked when i got back from my last journey and it was dry but since then it's been stood 2 days and got soaked in the recent rain.
Maybe i should mention my drive where it's parked is sloping so any water can easily go from front to back

Well it would have to be a steep slope as rear footwell up to boot level is approx 150mm.

Is it a 5dr, if so check the rear door membranes.

Thread hijack, apologies!

Do the 5 door Golf's (MK2 in particular) often suffer from this?

My brother's MK2 5 door has a soaking (you can basically splash your hand in it...) O/S rear passenger foot well.
It gets very bad after heavy and persistent rainfall when it's been stood. It doesn't matter what angle the car's parked at, so not sure if it's the same issue the OP has.
Is it a case of checking the polythene screening behind the door card and clearing the door drain holes?
There is also a small gap (about 2cm) in the lower window seal on the outside so water can definately get in there but would this small gap really allow the epic build up of water seen in the foot well? At any rate, if the inner polythene sheet was in perfect, sealed condition (and the drain holes were clear) then it wouldn't matter about the small gap would it?

Do the main rubber door seals leak on these cars? It's the only other thing I think it could be, but the door does seem to shut firmly and it isn't misaligned. Maybe it's been squashed flat over the course of 18 years!

Thanks for any input!

Edit: Just realised I've posted this in a MK3 section I think! I was just searching the forum for help with this problem and didn't think to check before I posted a reply!
Noob error, sorry!

id say check these

door seals
blocked suroof frain channels (poor boiling water down them with suroof open
pollen filter behind shuttle pannel
and as for the boot, 90% chance its just a back light seal gone.
