Hi All... Newbie Mk3 Owner
« on: 16 November 2009, 12:26 »
Hi All,
My name is Dave and I’m a qualified Mechanic from Farnham, Surrey.
I have just bought a ’94 Mk3 Golf 2.0Ltr 8v GTI and after a little turmoil should have it taxed and on the road this evening.

I have had a 300 Tdi Discovery for the last couple of years and it got to the point that I was only using it to do 6 miles a day for work and was costing me a fortune in fuel – plus there were more and more little things starting to play up, so it was time for the off.

Having sold the Disco I set about searching for its replacement and knew from the start it would have to be a Golf GTI as its another of the cars I’d always quite fancied owning – and now, a bit older, wasn’t going to be a shock to my insurance!

My wife and I spent the weekend scouring Ebay and Autotrader and making calls to no avail before finding one close to home on this forum!
However, on the day of collection I received a text from the guy saying he’d decided to keep it – Bugger it!

After spending most of the day moping and grumbling I had a call from my dad to say they’d had one in at work; it was going cheap as it needed a gearbox. What were the chances – they never get things like that through!
Our local Scrap yard said they had a box so it was all looking promising.
Short trip over to Guildford that evening to have a look only to discover it was probably the straightest and rust-free of all the ones we’d looked at… Plus it was Mauve which I’d decided I liked from the start.  Think the previous owner hadn’t ever cleaned it as its full of sand and bits of tree!
Next day trip to the scrappy only to discover it was the wrong box…. Bugger it again!

Wife managed to find one over at Wokingham Scrapyard and I headed over the next day, quick stop at Camberley’s for a clutch kit and dropped it all over to Guildford.
They put it all together for me to save towing it back to Aldershot (where I work) to do it myself but by the end of the day it wasn’t right…
Towed back to Aldershot, took it apart to find out was the wrong clutch and the guy who’d fitted it hadn’t checked. Doh!

Replaced clutch, new clutch cable needed, too late in the day… wait for Sunday.

Clutch cable collected from the other side of Guildford (None in stock near home) returned and fitted….  All up and running perfectly!

Tax disc today and a really good valet!  (Pics to follow)
