power steering whining

Folks im pretty sure its the power steering pump/belt that needs replacing asap, as it whines quite badly when going round bends, but its fine in a straightline, anyone got the part numbers for the above or an idea on how to do it ? thanks

it will either be the belt or the alternator pulley has seized  :wink:

cheers steve, I just noticed the power steering fluid was low so took the cap off and spun the steering wheel one way then the other and topped it up, will test it out tomorrow morning hopefully that may of been the problem,

they whine when the fluid is low so may just need the top up  :smiley:

if it is low and drops again check the pressure switch, its below the opening of the throttle body near the bottom of the engine, mine failed a while back and leaked quite a bit, they are about £20 from the dealers and a 2 min job to change, power steering fluid shouldn't drop.

Exactly.

I couldn't get my head around the earlier post suggesting that it would be the pully siezed. It shouldn't sieze unless the car was stood for years, and then it would whine all the time, regardless of steering position.

But with low fluid, yes, would whine when steering. Would be worse if the fluid was even lower.

its a common fault and whines at idle and when turning corners at low speed :tongue:
when my fluid starting dropping down it was the first signs of the steering rack seals going :cry:
