Remapping?
« on: 04 October 2004, 23:07 »
I ve been looking for a mint 16v mk3 for a while now but cant find one thats either not been thrashed or has not been souped up badly. So, ive decided to hang on to my 8v for a while longer. Its in great nick (apart from my damn rattling heatshield!) and Ive looked after it really well. To make the next few months more fun, i want to get it remapped. Ive found a place in Bicester called AMD that'll boost it by upto 15Bhp for ?350. Anyone chipped or remapped their golf, cos i want to know peoples opinion about getting this done. Its a lot of money (only ?50 extra on insurance tho!) and i dont want to be disappointed with the results.
Any comments much appreciated.

great site that AMD for info on modding -  here's the link if anyone else is interested.

i had my mrkIII 8v tuned and rolling roaded a few weeks ago and not a remap which i somehow thought. the aftermath has been a much smoother and quiter motor. it seems instead of having to plant the pedal all the time, the power seems to be where it should be. i am a little dubious of the guys comment now hearing feedback from people on this board as he said that after the rolling road and his tweaks, which involved no upgrades, the power is coming out a 130bhp... he said that the motor is a very good one but i'm still not sure that, that substitutes for a 15bhp increase on a standard car with being standard itself.

he let me a have a shot of a small bit of kit which fits on to the injectors? right hand side of the block.. says will give minor power increase low end but better mpg..

he also showed me another black box bit of kit which he says is supposed to give as much power as a chip but is 1/3 cheaper.

i'm going to fire back and get more info on this injector thing this weekend. i was seriously hungover when he was going through these upgrades and payed no attention to the deatils, names, brands etc. all i heard was power increase.. :)

i'll get back after the w/e with more info...

This injector thing - did he mention anything about a non-return valve?
Coz if thats what it is - it doesnt give any power increase just a faster trottle response.

Well if its what i'm thinking of then it raises the pressure by restricting the return to the tank. Thereby cutting trottle lag. (I got one on my Mi 16 and it does give a better response)

As for tuning an 8v then a guy called Lostbok has had a lot of work done recently at AMD so he could give ya some tips.

Cost about ?60 - took only about half an hour to fit.

Yes i would say on balance it is worth it. But i would poo poo anybody trying to say it gives any power increase. I didnt notice any, but the trottle response is instant.
