water leak sealant

i took my dash out today to change heater matrix and noticed my passengers footwell was slightly p*ss wet through  :cry: after some looking around i think ive found it in the scuttle where the heater housing mounts
im going to remove the plastic housing clean it all up but then im not sure what to use  what do you guys use to seal leaks
im not using bathroom/silicone sealant

I had the exact same problem on my last golf and now on my new one, all i did was use clear silicone around the passenger side of the windcreen seal , wiped it in with my finger, then wiped all the excess away with a solvent wipe untill there was no excess sealant and it worked a treat. haven't got around to doing it to my new mk 2 though as it always seems to be wet and i dont have a garage to do it in.

mine was a bit wet in corner of screen but i thought it was condensation i will have a better look at that
