But most importantly of all, if these tuning houses can tune that engine to 250bhp so easily why couldn't VW do it in the first place? They just make the standard 210 seem a bit stingy to me.

They did it's called the Golf R. If the GTI were more powerful who would buy the 'R'.
Well apart from uprated stronger internals a bigger turbo and much more etc etc etc that make the two engines different.
You do have to ask yourselfs who knows best, VWs Engineers and QC (with there massive budget) and extensive testing that made them goto those lengths to change the engine to get more power or tuners.

The Oettinger Golf is 34730 Euro with the base GTi costing 29290 Euro. With the exchange rate at 1.07 ish as it ws yesterday that makes the basic GTi £27000 and the tuned one £32500 or so.
So maybe the R is a bargain after all!!!!!!!

My attempt at a translation via Google translate.  Not prefect, but you get the idea...

The howling of the Gölfe
The pack rushes from one curve, not begrudge the other an inch. But which of the five-tuned VW Golf GTI has the makings of a leader? Oettinger, McChip-DKR, Wendland, EAH and Customs Wetterauer in comparison.

By Florian Neher now 33 years since the VW Golf GTI Oettinger accompanied the history of the company, which dates back to 1946. Each of the six generations of golf was in front of you, tickling sleeping horsepower from the depths of the combustion chambers. Helped one of the first GTI in the year 1976, they with live cam, elaborately curved manifolds, or even the legendary four-valve cylinder head of stately power increase, it is sufficient now (at least as a first step), the reserves of the turbocharged engine via software modification nibble. 40 hp jump out of it, the GTI is so the "Fast-250-km/h-Auto. The competitors can not be stingy: EAH Customs, McChip-DKR, Wendland, and Wetterau also connect the 250 to 260 hp on the scene and want a say in the question of who is currently expanding Germany's most sporty GTI, a say a major role here.

With a wheel / Wendland, the suspension of the GTI optimized
Balanced: Wendland puts the Golf GTI with the wheel / Leibe.Riesige to technical tricks are not needed for this, for pushing the VW Golf GTI been an absolutely basic to the fast start. Shines Already in the works set-up the chassis with just as sated as a safe road holding. The binding steering, powerful brakes and the seats provide excellent lateral support presentive further conditions for sporty driving. Fine tuning is needed to address if we are to make a good product even better. This follows the company motto Wendland, by focusing on the standard suspension of the GTI with the wheel / of the body. Just like in racing, the men of Wendland adjust the spring tension on each wheel in terms of a best possible weight distribution with a correspondingly favorable impact on driving. The price of 300 euros is also a sportier setting of toe and camber values included. As a result of the Wendland-GTI is no deeper than the production model, but tighter. Alternatively, is available at 2000 euros a fully adjustable Bilstein coil-over suspension. Rounding out the chassis modifications with ATS-8 x 18-inch wheels and tires in size 235/40 (Series: at 225/45 7.5 x 17).

The clear winner in terms of optics is the Gulf of EAH Customs
Strong performance: EAH Customs missed the GTI a matte black Optik.Auf Sachsenring does Wendland vote well. Our race car test driver Guido Naumann summarizes his impressions: "The Wendland has a total amount of grip, the front is nice and quiet, the rear axle, but a little stiff." It's enough for third fastest lap, with the difference for the top time is just ridiculous four tenths seconds. A big plus when driving on the last groove peels out once again the good old manual transmission, which implements the translation needs of the driver without electronic censorship. The VW DSG dual clutch transmission ( "Direct") enters the Gulf of EAH Customs Sachsenring. The lush and otherwise Golf GTI equipped with factory options of Eichsfelder dealership represents the equivalent of the legendary 46,190 euros - a base model GTI in EAH-trim, however, is already getting less for $ 10,000. Matt Black Film envelops the body and gives the dramatic look of a stealth bomber, black OZ Super Turismo 19-inch wheels and various parts Echtkarbon perfect through and through the dark appearance of the EAH-GTI.

DISPLAY Consistently, the lowering by H & R Coilovers: For 50 mm went down, the tire walls duck already in the wheel arches. The Langsamfahrkomfort is correspondingly modest, but the faster you go, the better it gets. So off to the racetrack. EAH Customs here recommends a tire pressure of 3.3 bar is already clear in the first corners: This is too much. The tightly inflated tires Continental have little grip, the EAH lubricates helplessly on the Sachsenring, the intervention has not been fully deactivated ESP constantly. More problems for the deep chassis set-up. O-Ton Guido Naumann: "tires too hard, no grip, suspension too stiff, too much travel, you can not take the curbs. The driving, however, remains good-natured." So add up the finish almost three seconds on the record.

The Wetterauer GTI burns the day's best time in the asphalt
Do not beat in this comparison: the Golf GTI Wetterauer.Wie it faster, showing the Wetterauer GTI. He also comes with DSG, which has a positive effect due to the ultra-short switching times the acceleration. On the racetrack it does not, however, represents an optimum, because it turns up in manual shift mode in the achievement of the rigidly-programmed speed limits or down. The manual gearbox mode (via steering wheel paddles or shift lever), then, is actually a "halbmanueller" mode, where in accelerator control fully depressed sometimes unnecessarily turned down for too long turned out, instead of leave to the high-torque turbo engine, powerful middle speeds. On the other hand, the automatic transmission at 6800 rpm switches high (the red area of the rev incidentally begins at 6,200 trips). So far, so good - but unfortunately it does too close to corners, where the pilot the next highest gear just can not use. To sum can drive and engine braking torque via the clutch and manual gearbox simply better dosing, the driver simply has greater control, while squeezing the DSG the engine in an electronic brace.

Nevertheless burns Wetterauer the day's best time in the asphalt, says while each switching operation with a full ball from the Edelstahlendtopf. The assembled from the factory, to surcharge DCC suspension is in addition to the normal position, the damper "Comfort" and "sport". Wetterauer change the damping system, nothing, explains the scheme but with H & R springs by a moderate 30 millimeters deep. Thus, the suspension still has enough travel, running as if on rails and shines with a very direct steering ability. Major share of the top lap time have the Hankook tires, which offer at the Sachsenring a really excellent grip.

As McChip-DKR and Oettinger beat on the track, you will find in the gallery. The full comparison with all the technical data and tables are available as a download archive.

skipping through the pics, seems that these tuned golfs do about 6-1 to 6.3 secs to 100kph for the DSG.  strangely the manual only does 6.7

Yeah, the black badges look cool. Some of the carbon wrapping looks good too.
I like the Oettinger one the best I think, mostly because of the wheels....mind you the Audi splits on the black one in the last photograph look sexy too. Mmmmmm
