hid passed mot?
« on: 12 November 2009, 12:39 »
Recently had a mot done, with my hid kit still installed at a vw dealer. It passed was well chuffed simply because i forgot to take it out b4 i dropped it in.

So in celebration i brought the white bulb set for the rear number plate from awesome gti. Ive seen the new toyota's with this and it looks amazing, and due to the number plate inset we have on the mk5 i think it will look equally dope on mine!!!

I think the MOT is only looking at beam pattern, rather than legality of light source.

still illegal no matter if it passes MOT.  i.e. if you got stopped by DoT and they found it, they could make you take it off, as you could of technically put it on after your MOT.

And falling foul of the construction and use regulations will result in a more substantial fine...

This is correct. The same thing was said in the mk3 section recently and confirmed. Illegal but the MOT only checks the beam pattern.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Department of Transport? Now DfT (Dept. for Transport) of which VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) and VOSA (Vehicle Operator and Services Agency) are the agencies that look after type approval, MOT's, road worthiness etc.

If you had an accident and the insurance assesor found the HIDs, they could say as its not factory it invalidates your insurance and therefore you ain't covered. This applies to any mods you don't tell the insurance company about, they can be real bastards, regardless of a MOT

Just as importantly, if you were stopped by a plod who knew what he was doing or VOSA or one fo the other agencies you could/would be charged under the Construction and Use Regulations which can be, shall we say, draconian campared to your usual Road Traffic Act stuff...

That would wipe the smile off your face...
