Speed Bumps a problem?
« on: 11 November 2009, 21:26 »
I've just ordered my first Gti, and trading UP! from a mk5 1.4s (ooh 80 horses!) and have never had any trouble with catching speed bumps but have just realised how low the gti appears to be, i'm wondering now if it's going to be an issue? does anyone else live in an area with lots of these evil things that can comment?
Currently pootling around in our family wagen, a Tiguan SEL 😂

I've got some evil ones on the entrance road to my work.  I find the ACC at Comfort makes the car smoother going over them, but the height of the car hasn't been a problem at all.

I was also worried about how low the car appeared to be.  I think it's lower than my Peugeot GTi, and that seemed to "ground" at speed on country roads, at the bottom of hills.  That was the main limiting factor on the speed of that car.  However, I haven't had the problem at all with the Golf.  It takes the same roads in "bat out of hell" mode without anything touching the road.  I suspect I might have been hearing the Peugeot's one remaining front mud-flap catching on the road, rather than the car itself.  (I'm thinking about getting mud flaps on the Golf, don't know if it's wise....)

I'm still a little concerned about ferry ramps.  The ramp of the ferry to the island where many of my family live is notorious for caching low cars, and I saw a caravan badly damaged by it once (they have re-graded the slipway since then, though.)  I haven't been visiting there yet, so I don't know whether it will be a problem.

My car also got ACC with 17s. The ride is simply brilliant and had no prob with potholes, speed bumps in comfort mode. The car is wide enough to go thru those square shape bump without needing to slow down!
In sport the car is a bit sharper without compromising the ride too much.
This car is simply astonishing! Well worth the wait!

I've been driving lowered cars for 20 years and rarely had any issues with speed bumps. This thread has sold me on the ACC though - I hadn't thought of the comfort advantage of using it over speed bumps.

By the way, the stock GTI isn't low. These are low:

Mines not lowered but is running wider than standard wheels with less offset too (8x18 ET44) and I haven't grounded on anything yet. The same wheels used to catch the arch liner in my mk5 going over speed mountains.

Where I live is surrounded by speed bumps (square ones in the middle), and the MK5 GTI has gone over them no problems at a fair speed (also if I catch one with the wheel, no prob as it;s absorbed fine. Also too the Mk6 GTI test car up and down a bit, was the same = perfect.
Got some nasty solid rubber ramps at the local Asda that run the width of the road. Both Mk5 and Mk6 has no problems.
Only problem with speed bumps if if you tend to have something which is lower still such as an R8 type of car.
