VW car availability
« on: 11 November 2009, 11:53 »
I've posted previously about how long /my/ wait is for a GTi.

Was talking with a girl who works with us this morning who ordered a Scirocco in April and is STILL waiting. She's had the usual stuff from the dealer etc. but the build week is continually being put back.

Picking up suggestions from this forum I suggested she contact Customer Service to progress. She said, that's easy, I live in Milton Keynes, so she's going to pay a visit to VAG HQ [whether that helps or hinders I wouldn't like to say].

so, it's not just us golfers who have to endure incredible delays in getting our hands on our cars, it's the windy roc's too.

I can understand the factory being on slow time, with this years slump, however they must have enough orders in the pot to step up a gear and get things on a shorter lead time now?

I believe the big problem are the motors. There is a big shortage on 1.4s and 2.0s... what i heard.

They certainly aren't on a go slow. They are now working 6 days a week and never shut for summer, which they always do. They are also talking about not closing for Christmas.

Roc's are made in Portugal though...you also almost quoted a VW UK note to dealers I saw verbatim!

the Roc in question will probably be a 1.4 or with Sunroof or Xenons (or all three).  The 1.4 plant is allegedly the most hard pressed (probably quoting a dealer there though so who knows?).

Well it was a dealer that told me this about a month ago
I enquired about the 1.4 and was told at least 6 to 7 months, then I see VW put the same announcement on their www.
Apparently the problem is a whole range of cars use the same 1.4 engine across different brands so they can't churn them out quick enough.

One of the issues delaying new car production may be component suppliers who have stopped manufacturing certain parts, or gone out of business due to a lack of bank credit and orders from the big manufacturers. Also until demand for new cars picks up properly everyone throughout the supply chain is going to be cautiously ordering minimum quantities and this will mean having to wait until 'Joe the Widget Maker' machines his next batch of VW 1.4 TSI valves, or whatever. Car production is so dependent on 'just in time' delivery of only what is needed in the next few hours that when it breaks down, it takes a lot of time to get it all back together and running smoothly.

So what parts or items are lacking on the GTi then?

It doesn't use a 1.4 lump so that out?

But what about options such as Xennons? We know the Roc's had major delay problems with these a while back, are the August order people all wanting Xennons?

No - I was one of them until recently.  Nobody really knows (AFAICS).  Exchange Rate probably doesn't help anybody here along with various other factors like scrappage etc.

Made me smile that was all - saw somebody on another forum saying that VW Germany have a different opinion...
