Engine cutting out
« on: 24 July 2003, 10:12 »
I have bought myself a Mk1 project. Hopefully be ready for the show season next year.

The problem I have is that when the engine warms up the revs drop until the car cuts out. If I leave it to cool down again it will start, run until it comes up to temp and then the revs die again.

Anyboby got any ideas. Its a 1800.

cheers

Lee

Hmmm, thats an odd one. Sounds like its fine all the while its on the cold start/warm up cycle but once up to temp the idle is too low. Have you tried increasing the idle speed?

Cannot drive it yet as the clutch has gone :o this isn't a problem though as the engine isn't going to be staying in the car  ;)

I just wanted the engine running OK when I sold it. (anybody want it real cheap?)

When starting from cold she fires up straight away and ticks over at about 1600 revs. After a few couple of minutes the revs drop slowly. This is where I would expect them to level off at about 900revs (ish) but they just continue going down until it stalls.

Where is the idle screw? Is it the one on the back of the throttle body?

Yeah, its on the back of the throttle body. 7mm socket fits on it if its the hex type. Otherwise its a flatbladed bit.

What are you planning to replace the 1800 engine with?

Have you got one yet? How much are you looking/have you paid?
Might be interested in doing something similar with my cabrio.  ;)

G60 into a MK1, ooh lovely. I've been toying with the idea of sticking a 1.8T engine in my ragtop, any pearls of wisdom guys?

Good luck with the G60 Leew, see you next year. Keep us posted on your progress.

Hmmmm a 1.8T engine in there would be good too. Have to wait and see what comes up.
We'll have to keep our eyes open for suitable donor vehicles.
