Rattle in passenger seat back
« on: 09 November 2009, 12:50 »
Hi all,

My 06 GTi 3 door has suffered from a rattle which seems to come from the seat back but only occurs when the seat is unoccupied. VW relaced the handle under warranty but that didn't cure it and they basically gave up there.

The car is going back to them tomorrow to get other things fixed which were 'fixed' under warranty but have since re-occured and want them to look into this again. I have removed the headreast and elimintated that as the source, also wedged closed the handle so its not that either. It seems to actually be coming from inside the seat and is a sort of 'plasticky rattle' that happens on bumpy road surfaces.

Has anyone else come across this and found the source?

Cheers,

Mike

i get a more of a metal rattle when the passenger seat is unoccupied.  i find if I adjust the seat back, or move the seat forward it goes away.

Hi Mike

My car had its 2 year 20000 mile service last month and I had a rattle from somewhere in the back that sounds a bit like yours.  Fair play to VW they kept it for 2 days until they finally found the source (it must be a nightmare trying to pinpoint it) and it turned out to be a rear passenger seatbelt.  This was replaced under warranty and has solved the problem.  Might be worth mentioning?  Hope you get it sorted, I know how annoying it is having a rattle you can't sort out.

Sorry Mike just re-read your post and see you're talking about a front seat.  However, might still be worth checking the belt as VW also replaced my front passenger seatbelt as there was a rattle coming from that as well which they picked up on.

Hi,

Thanks for the posts-its in the garage today and apparently they've ordered a replacement collar and rod(?) for the seat back.

They were also meant to be investigating an engine rattle on start up, which has reoccured outside of warranty after they did a warranty repair (I think they replaced timing chain tensioner etc), but now seem to be saying there is a fault with the intake flap/motor....

Cheers,

Mike
