Air flow meter - I know, bear with me

OK got the air flow meter off the car at the mo. Intention was to clean up the electrical parts. But how the ?8&# do you get in to do this. And yes I have searched but cannot find anything in the masses of stuff that tells me how to do this. Resistances and stuff all check out with the multimeter.
Cheers.

Thanks Sir Digby - I would guess that it is just stuck on with silicone or similar. Mine is an 8v digi also. Just being extra cautious - don't want to bu**er anything up.

you can just lever it off with a screw driver, but its a sealed unit so shouldnt really need cleaning in there i would have thought

yeah mate as Dan says I wouldnt bother, if its all checking out ok with the multimeter or whatever then I doubt taking it apart is gonna do anything. I used mine without a cover or ages, it got filthy and still worked fine. Are you having running problems? Hence wanting to take it apart?

I am hoping that cleaning the electrical stuff inside might help sort the popping in my exhaust. My searches have shown that whatever is in there can get electrically dirty like a switch and can suffer from 'tracking'. So I wanted to have a look and see if a blast of switch cleaner might improve things. If it doesn't I will try something else for my popping?

To be honest, if you have done the resistances checks, then leave well alone and use it. If there was something wrong with it, the resistances will be all over the place or you would get an open circuit.

replace the blue temp sensor and check the setup as per my digifant faq before you open this. generally they dont go wrong but it is possible. find another from the scrappy before you strip yourts down, dont want to mess it up then have a non running car eh?
MK3/Vento/Passat early 2.0 8v will have what you want, nick the isv of it as well. later ones use a different item which wont work. basically it has to look the same as yours!

Thanks all - I think I will take Darn Pb and RJ's advice and leave alone. btw already replaced temp sender with genuine VW and has been tuned following your faq, RJ. But still I get the popping in exhaust. Otherwise it is running very well. So I am looking and trying the less obvious things. All vac hoses relaced, new ISV, idle switch set correctly, new flying saucer and bung, new air filter and plugs at last service. Got dizzy cap and rotor on order, new genuine VW knock sensor.
Might replace the idle screw at next tune up just in case there is a small air leak.
Have I missed anything?
