Import
« on: 06 November 2009, 21:04 »
Hi there

I'm new to this forum, but have been a member of another car forum (TT-Forum) for the past 6 years. Sadly my TT ownership will end tomorrow when I do the deal on my 2007 Audi TT 2.0T FSI.

I need something more practical as we have a baby on the way, so I'm thinking about getting back behind the wheel of a Golf GTi. I have previously owned a Mk3 16V and a Mk4 1.8T and was pretty happy with them both despite reading bad car reviews. After a drive in a MK5 GTI I can see that VW have done something about all the stick they took and recreated the 'GTi' once again!

Before I upset any Mk3 or 4 owners I will deal with the matter in hand. I have found what seems on paper a very good Mk5 GTi for sale with very good spec, low mileage for what appears to be a good price! BUT as with everything that appears to be a good deal there tends to be a catch. The catch is it's an import! My question is should I consider it or walk away now? My Mk4 was actually an import and I saved £5000 against a UK car, but come resale I had to sell privately as dealers didn't want to know! I'm wondering if things have changed as this was over 6 years ago and I am sure I have recently seen imports on VW forecourts for no less than UK cars??

I would appreciate any honest answers.

Cheers
Chris

My 57 plate GTI is an import (came from a Dutch dealer) and to me it is no different to a UK purchased car.  It is full UK spec and built from the same German factory as UK sourced cars.

I have recently taken out a third years warranty with VW as it should help when I come to sell it.

If the car you have seen is a true parallel import and not one of those dodgy ones from places like Motorpoint (do a search in this forum) then there shouldn't be any problems.  I'd be upset if someone didn't want to buy my car because it is an 'import'.

I would hope that when I come to part ex mine, the dealer should treat it like a UK car.  There is no reason why they should offer me less money as it is the same car.  Some dealers might say that it is an import and because of that it is worth less (and then they will sell it similarly priced as a UK car).

As you have seen imports for same/similar price then I hope that things have changed for the better.

I once had an import Ford Puma  :embarassed: (bought from Trade Sales in Slough) and when I traded it in for a Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI in 2004, the dealer actually gave me a very good price and said that it didn't matter that it was an import as it was the same car.   There are some good dealers out there!

Sorry if I have rambled on and not answered your question.  I would consider the car if it was a true parallel import.  Get the full history from the dealer, where and when it was manufactured, when it was first registered, how many owners and how much warranty is left on it.  If everything seems in order then it could be a bargain.

And do a search on this forum as there have been some horror stories with some import cars and those purchased from various car supermarkets.

^^

As above, I traded in my mk4 1.8T at a dealer and was told that after 3 years it didn't make a difference to the trade in value if it was an import or not

My car Is a Cloggy import.
Much better spec than than the UK basic cars.
No one can even tell it's an import as I'm the first owner on the V5.

I saved a lot of money.

I got a BMW 323 from eindoven in 96, saved £8k on uk list! Traded it and the BMW dealer said whilst they wouldn't sell it themselves the price I got was no different to that if a uk sourced car.

It was a great car made better by the fact that I got one over on the robbing stealers.

One thing to watch is that with mine the first owner didn't register it properly on the VW system so whenever I tried to book it in with the reg no they kept telling me it didn't exist

Easy to sort though

there was some stigma with imported cars a few years ago, but I even saw a 1 year old GTI on a VW stealers forecourt advertised as a import, so that stigma is dying somewhat, esp with the credit crunch!

just check the specs and that you may have to take less money come selling time.  at least its a bargaining point when buying it!
