G40
« on: 01 October 2004, 23:41 »
Right, how easy would it be to upgrade my 1.3 to a G40?? I know that this is one of the easiest upgrades that can be done to the 1.3, without having to go silly on other things!

Would all of the bits be readily available or not?

you will have to find a charger and a intercooler.
When we were selling a G40 charger everyone wants them, so it will be a matter of finding a charger for sale and getting there first!
BTW the RS turbo intercooler is a easy alternative to use and readly avalible  ;)

Didn't think it would be as simple as that! Would i be able to buy the G40 bits new, or am i looking for a scrapped polo? What exactly would i have to do for the RS upgrade? The same if not similar??

P.s How much am i looking at for either option, and would it actually be that worthwhile?

Nah, i much prefer the Golf, and besides, it would be cheaper to just upgrade mine?!

Your best bet is probably to find an accident damaged g40 and buy the whole car then you will have everything you need. There was one on ebay recently but it still went for silly money as it was only a light front end accident.
As for what you would need.........probably everything.
Your car isn't injection so you would need the whole fuel system, ecu and wiring loom. As mentioned earlier the compression ratio on your bottom end is unlikely to be the same, the oil pump/system is probably different, an oil feed for the charger will be required, the clutch probably wouldn't be up to the job, the gearbox ratios probably wouldn't be suitable...........sorry not trying to quash your idea it's a great one, has been done by a couple of people so I'm sure the info is out there somwhere. I would think you would definately need a donor car though.

Don't worry, if its hard it will get quashed all by itself!! :'(

Might look into getting a polo from somewhere then! Um, also, where would i take it to get it done, or would i be able to do it all myself?

Not sure where would be the best place to go, I suppose it depends where you are based. I've never had any major mods like that done but I'm sure the likes of Dizzie etc who have could recommend a few places.
As for doing it yourself, I suppose the initial transplant, cabling up, fuel system fitting etc would be simple enough as long as you are handy with a spanner, have the tools and have a decent indoor workshop (something I would love to have).
I think the difficult bit comes when you have to build some suitable driveshafts, hook up the clutch, find a suitable exhaust and all those type of things.

Hmm, we'll have to see about this then! I might just look for a GL5 again, would be easier!!!!

Thanks for your help!
