Smoking battery cable - more help needed please

not mine thankfully but my mates AUM 1.8T

His missus has just had the Golf cut out on her and when she tried to start it again it wouldn't. Eventually she got it going but the black cable on the top of the battery is smoking...

Anyone got any ideas what this feeds? Got a feeling I'll be the one fixing it so as much info as poss please lol

It may be related to the fuses on top of the battery. Read my thread called 'problem with your electrics'

least its not yours wes  :wink:
anyway the black cable from the battery is the earth feed which splits in two i would imagine one to the chassis and the other is onto the gearbox if its been smoking then there could be a possibility that the fusible links on the battery top may have broken/melted etc

update...

he has a new battery fuse box but he's trying to work out what rating of fuses to get for it. He has 5 wires on the top so we've worked out 4 of them from my car but the 5th is a mystery as all the documentation I can find points to it being for a TDI (glow plug cooling)

Has anyone else got a 5th wire on their battery fuse box? (r/h side as you look at the battery, the black wire being on the far l/hand side) If so can you tell me what rating it is?
