Extras in order of importance:

1. ACC. The one extra you just gotta have is ACC. it transforms the car. It is what makes it ride so much better in all situations.

2. DSG. The next extra you gotta  is DSG. it takes a bit of getting used to after a manual, but is SOOOOO much fun, especially when you learn to use it in manual, i.e. you change gears yourself with the paddleshift flappies.

3. Leather. Lasts longer than cloth and really suits the car adding an extra layer of class.

4. RDS 510 SatNAv. Expensive, but works well. It is really useful if you like to tour with your car.

5. Parking sensors. Once you've had them it is very hard to go back to not having them. Having a rear view camera is nice, but not really essential. Ditto park assist.

6. Sun roof. Makes the GTI a genuine alternative to trad. brit sports car. Nice for the odd days when British weather is actually half decent. Makes cabin more airy. VW do sun roofs very well and certainly better than BMW.

7. 18" wheels. Purely for the bling factor. Ride probably better on 17". Ditto 19" only more so.

Everything else really doesn't matter, even though they're nice to have.
Golf R - almost on order - 5-door, DSG, Rising Blue, leather, 19" alloys, RNS510 with Dynaudio, ACC, Sunroof, Parking camera and sensors, luxury pack and cruise control.

IMO i have different thoughts on those 6 but what would the world be like if we all had the same taste.
1: Gimmic and i just hope its more reliable than previous VAG versions. Also if you keep your car for very long periods shocks go soft, they use to say replace around 60K for normal use sooner for hard use so its going to cost alot to replace them like for like.
2: Still find it flawed.
3: Not very good quality in VWs and sags and creases very quickly, leathers just not what it was. Also makes the interior much darker. Also not as grippy as cloth.
4: Does not have full postcodes.
5: They flatline beep far too early, much better to simply get to know the size of your car and learn to drive.
6: Reduces the shells strength, in many years time will leaks due to been a glass type and other problems including rattles. Booms when open at slow speeds.
7: White worm

Nice spec car.

Got to say I didn't like the std RCD310. Once I saw the RCD510 it was a case of I want that. Didn't bother with the audio pack but the £360 was a steal for adding such sparkle to the car's interior. Also it's got a fantastic mode that shows the A\C settings way better than the normal control.
each to their own, but have another look at the RCD510. I do agree against the satnave. My HTC mobile phone nav is way better than built in and it';s nuts paying £1800 when you get it in your phone!

Sunroof was a key option for me. Current GGI now 4 years old has one and it's never had any problems, noticed on the new version with the window tint it added a noticable increase in the light at the back (sat in one with a sunroof, and one without). In terms of structual intregirty (can't see that effecting a car such a the mk6 golf. Would be a serious issue if it did (thinking NCAP here etc).

Cloth seats for me was far better than leather seats.

My take on Tailpipe's comments

1. ACC. I've got it, but I don't notice it as making such a huge difference.  If you're swithering, I probably wouldn't.

2. DSG. I tend to agree.  The DSG is way cool.  (I accidentally put it in S yesterday, which I haven't done before - what was that car doing!!!  Wow!!!)  I'm starting to play with the paddles, and that's cool too.  The main difference is actually losing the control you can get from riding the clutch at very slow speeds, and I haven't found that critical.

3. I went off the idea of leather.  Car looks dark, and actually, the leather wasn't nearly as classy as I had expected.  I like the cloth a lot, and if you've decided on cloth I wouldn't talk you out of it.

4. No idea about the Satnav.  I use a map.  I think I'd get a Road Angel for the speed traps and buy the SatNav version, if I wanted one.

5. Dunno about any of the parking assistants either because I haven't got them.  Parking a car hasn't got any harder - actually, it got easier, because my Peugeot had an enormous turning circle and the Golf is very manoeuverable in comparison.  Cool toy though, I suppose.

6. I'm all for the sun roof.  Prospero has one.  Really nice for nice days, and brightens up the interior.  (Had to close the shutter the other night though because the full moon flickering behind trees was scaring me witless.)

7. Oh, get the 18s, white worm and harder ride and kerb them if you look at them sideways - otherwise you'll have a clone of Prospero and we can't have that, really!

 Is that why the Americans call it a 'moon roof'?

RCD510 is essential - it suits the interior much better.  Don't bother with the Dynaudio, if you're happy with the RCD310 without Dynaudio, then why would getting the RCD510 mean you have to get Dynaudio?!

My personal list of must have options:

1, 18inch alloys - makes the car look complete
2, RCD510 - makes the interior look complete
3, Xenons - pricey, but deeply cool
4, Rear camera - i've reversed into a low post before and this would have saved £££ - neat gadget too to impress mates
5, ACC - essential in the speed bump capital that is London.  good for the spirited drives and motorways too.

DSG is not 100% necessary.  Manual is fine.
Leather creases and sags over time.  Check out the leather bolsters on any MkV - not a good look.
Satnav waaay too expensive.  I'll stick with TomTom.
Sun roof would be nice, but no strong desire hence not worth 500 quid better spent on other options.
Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

You will see from my signature what options I have on my car, imo they are all very good and make my car the individual VW designed the GTI to be.

Go with any of these and you will not be disappointed.

Going a bit left field here, but just choose how many doors you want and what sort of gearbox you would prefer and maybe whether you want a sunroof or not. The rest can all be added at a later date to some degree or other.
