While that leaves me feeling pretty optimistic about the Golf R in general, the Golf R has AWD so is likely to be heavier and less sharp as well as considerably more expensive.

The Golf R is actually less than £2k more than the Roc R.  The Golf GTI is more than £2k more than the Scirocco GT - does that make it considerably more expensive too?!

OK, the Roc comes with ACC and an RCD510 as standard - which the Golf doesn't... but the Golf has 4wd, 3 back seats and a bigger boot!  Surely even just the 4wd makes it worth the extra.
It did for me anyway!
Golf R... 3 door, DSG, Leather, Reflex Silver, Black 19" Talladega Wheels, ACC, Parking Sensors, RNS510 with Dynaudio, Reverse Camera, Luxury Pack, Cruise Control & Fiscon Bluetooth.

If it was a choice between the two... then the R is the one to go for without a doubt. Doesnt even need to be high spec for me. 19" wheels, xenons as std, maybe add the dynaudio and then retrofit the rns510. Jobs a gud un

The R is the one for me too: 5 seats and 5 doors. I reckon it may be quicker than a 'Roc R even though it isn't faster in a straight line, due to better traction, steering and damper rates.

The only problem is that a fully decked-out GTI costs £32K and a fully decked-out R costs £38K. That's a big difference. it isn't just a question of can i afford it, but equally should i pay that for a Golf?

The answer is increasingly looking like: yes.
Golf R - almost on order - 5-door, DSG, Rising Blue, leather, 19" alloys, RNS510 with Dynaudio, ACC, Sunroof, Parking camera and sensors, luxury pack and cruise control.

Looks rubbish... FFS - £35K for a Golf! Are they having a laugh or something? And where's the V6? Might as well just buy an S3. Or the RS3 which will - no doubt - be much better. I mean that's 1 year old M3 territory... blah... blah... blah...

I - for one - will NOT be ordering one.

Kev, I am not sure what your issue is, and I mean this in the nicest possible way but this forum has always been open to discussions about the R models. The new R is more than ever an extension of the GTI, a variation of it, whatever way you like to put it. Everyone is welcome here and there has never been an issue with discussing Golf R models before. People such as myself have owned a GTI and then moved on to an R32 but still enjoy the chat, knowledge and discussion on here.

As an R32 owner I am (and I know lots of others on here) every bit interested in performance Golfs as a whole whether GTI/ED30/R. I think you are just getting a bit over the top about it, its no big deal. I like to hear other peoples viewpoints on both models. On the R32 forum we have plenty of discussions about Roc/GTI....ie Non R32.

Personally no, but its not up to me, thats why I asked for an R childforum of this section to be setup, so I dont need to read about crap I aint interested in.

then feel free to not read or posts in threads that you are not interested in. problem solved for the one person who has an issue with it, rather than messing the board up for a lot of others.
