Turning Golf R into a stealth car
« on: 05 November 2009, 10:01 »
I'm quite tempted by the new Golf R and might get a 1-2yr old one in the future.

But what I won't like about the car is the extra attention it will receive, particularly from the criminal element. So, I'm wondering, how easy would it be to turn it into a more standard looking Golf?

Madness I know, and I'm not that serious about it but would be curious anyway...

The obvious things I can think of are:

Front grill: maybe just remove R badge
Front bumper: replace with standard golf bumper, but may not wrok as wheel arches seem bigger on R, maybe GTI bumper would work?
Wheels: Could replace with some more bog standard Golf alloys?
Wing mirrors: Painted black aren't they? Maybe replace with standard mirrors too, or just have painted body colour.
Rear bumper: Fine but exhausts are a giveaway. Suspect it would be very expensive to replace with standard exhaust? Easy to remove the R badge.
Rear lights: Bit of a giveaway but lots of people fit aftermarket lights.
Interior: R badge on seats and on steering wheel. Might leave these.

I guess all the above inc labour would be about 5k? And you end up with worse looking car, lol, madness.

On the surface, very easy. Front and rear bumpers from an ordinary Golf, Bluemotion badge, smaller wheels (mindful of the big brakes), standard tail lights, job done. The latest Golf Bluemotion even has the same side skirts as the R to give you a helping hand. I guess you'd also need to see if a GTD rear exhaust silencer fits so the tailpipe is in the right place and pull the tailgate spoiler off, but really that's about all. Wouldn't be cheap, even using parts from a scrap yard, unless you sold/swapped all your R parts.
