V5 - VIN number
« on: 04 November 2009, 22:40 »
Hi, not sure if this is the right section, but ...

I bought a mk2 gti 4 weeks ago now, i was given the new keepers supplement but never saw the original V5 or i didnt sign anything either (it totally slipped my mind) i know i have to wait 6 weeks before i call to report if i havent recieved the new logbook but not sure if the person i bought it off even owned the car on paper (he sells alot of vw's on ebay)

anyway, i done a vehicle check online and it said the last registered keeper was in 2007 and the guy i bought it off only had it a few months, also, i typed in the VIN number that i found on the MOT certificates and it came back saying the number i typed in doesnt match the one on the database for my car.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

Theres a website that gives you a free vehicle check when you put in the registration number, i'll try and find the site for you

https://www.mycarcheck.com/

Might be able to verify if it has been recorded stolen and if the year, colour and spec match

Yeah something sounds a little bit odd, have you matched the vin on the mot to the actual vin on the car?

If you didn't fill out your address on the V5 yourself and sign it how will the DVLA know where to send the new docs. You are relying on the seller to fill it in properly and send it off........presuming you gave him your name & address? There is no way the VIN can change unless number plates were swapped to a similar car for the MOT. Presuming you have the car why not check the actual VIN on the car matches the DVLA records rather than the MoT certificate. You can also check the car's previous MoT history on the web, details are on the certificate, maybe the MoT certificate is a forgery?
Its a common trick to avoid showing the V5 or make an excuse if its a repaired write off because more recent 'write off/repair' events are shown on the bottom of the V5, often the seller will make an excuse that the V5 is lost or still with the DVLA........I almost got caught out with a clio this way not long ago.......beware!.......Always get the info off the V5 and run a data check 'before you buy it'!

+1.............sounds very dodgy :undecided:

I left the guy i sold it to with my address to fill out as he hadn't recieved the V5 himself. i'm starting to get bad feelings now, i've done a check from the number plate and it's come back as a cat D write off in 1999. Where can i find the VIN on the car itself?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure its either under the bonnet, near the catch. OR under the bonet, near the windscreen.
