You are in danger where you have it of obstructing the airbag if it goes off. I will post photos later once I get home.

Yeah that is true but I gathered the airbag in the wheel would do its trick rather than the one in the A pillar. What is that for anyway? With the seatbelt on, I can't imagine you would need an airbag a way up there!!

I would say if the car was in a big enough accident, the pillar could be pushed / crushed toward the driver. If the car rolled it could hit the driver.

Where does everyone have their mics?
I love my GTD

where does the factory mic go?  wouldn't it make sense to put it there too?

exactly where the OP has it located now although it should be on the drivers side rather than the passenger side

You can swap the position easily enough - the light fitting should pop out

Looking at the right hand grill (driver's side), it seems to be either solid, or has a blanking panel behind it - in other words I can't see through it.

only assuming here but its normally a bit of foam in that position - should be able to remove it

Isn't it part of the curtain airbag system? so if your in a side impact it should minimise damage to your face from the other cars bonnet! even if it did go of with the mic up there i don't think it would make much difference if the mic hit you in the head!

Sure it's not some kind of secret VW webcam so that all of Volkswagen can monitor my driving technique and have a laugh at my expense?

My MK5 had foam in that bit!  Thats where I fitted my Mic when I put my hands free in.
People always commented on how clear I sounded

If I was in that big an accident, I doubt an airbag would help me

Alan if you move yours and the sound is vastly improved, let me know and I'll move mine into the same position.

check out http://fiscon-mobile.com/products/mic.php it's about fitting it in the factory position by the light. To stop background noise they recommended to cut the plastic case around the mic, opening it up. Then get a piece of soft foam, cut a slit and feed the mic through so the mic sits shrouded by the foam.

Interesting link and "how to" guide there.
Although they do recommend

"For optimal voice quality and lowest installation cost, we recommend the position at the top left corner of the windshield. If an invisible installation is preferred, the microphone can, under certain circumstances, be installed in the interior overhead light. There are additional steps needed for this option, detailed below.

When the microphone is properly fitted, a very good sound quality can be achieved. We guarantee the best sound quality but only when the microphone is fitted in a visible location. "
