MK6 Monza Replica's £325
« on: 03 November 2009, 10:37 »
Eventually i tracked down these, i had a drama with a buckled wheel (dont ask)

I was sad when i found out the car i had brought had replicas on but what can i do! my fault for not checking, anyway!!

These are on e bay not a bad price for a cheap set, and i can safely say that there all good. i get a lot of comments on these.

Thought i'd share this .....

whats the expert (TT) opinion on buying replica's?  are they subject to the normal safety tests that OEM wheels are? this is so cheap, surely they cant be that good, think what the supplier pays for them to be able to sell at this price?

If you look after them and seal them properly there is nothing wrong with replicas imo.

Yes they weigh a bit more, but so will your wallet after.

The issue with replicas is the build quality - they can buckle when you hit a small pothole whereas a genuine one wouldn't. Also, remember the BBS Monzas were designed escpecially for the GTI.

Maybe thats where my problem originated, unfortunatley im not in the position to fork out for a original set. but trust me i wont make the same mistake again! nether the less ill still be pleased to get my hands on a single wheel to cure the buckled problem because its since gone through a wheel bearing and cost me almost £200!!

I have replica BBS LMs on mine as genuine ones run well into the thousands. (I know she needs lowering, its on the "to do list")

For any wheels Id suggest Poor Boys Wheel Sealant (http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/poorboys-wheel-sealant/prod_9.html) give them a good coating of this now and again, even better if you actually take the wheel off and give it a proper going over. Should prevent any salt and crap getting in which might cause the nasty "white worm" problem genuine AND replica monzas get. Your BBS CHs that you have on your ED30 (Im guessing your running standard wheels?) wont be as seseptable to the "white worm" as you dont have a polished face like the Monzas, they are a NIGHTMARE to keep looking fresh, but a small break in the lacquer from a kerb and you can easily get in real trouble (this is the case from pretty much any alloy).

As for what car I'm currently driving, I'm not as I've got myself a 9 month driving ban (8 months 26 days left . . . .) :(  . MK5 has been SORN and gone into storage till June.
