A few questions to a new owner..
« on: 02 November 2009, 09:23 »
Hi guys, I've always been a mk2 owner in the past but a mk1 popped up for sale I couldnt refuse! So I'm now a mk1 owner :D

I've got a few questions..

Where is best to buy parts for a mk1? I know there's stuff on Ebay but I'm wondering about new items, etc.

Where can I find chrome wing mirrors? Or are they really rare?

Those plastic door handles painted chrome.. are they any good? Or will I just regret buying them?

I'm putting a KR in it so it'll need converting to 5 speed.. What will I need for this?

Thanks! A project thread will be started later today with pictures :)

hooray welcome to the best mark

parts like oil filter i only get from vw, most other stuff you can get off ebay from sellers like 'lesbray', 'volksmine' , gsf [quality can be iffy] do quite abit, avs car parts for genuine top mounts, crazy quiff does alot of stuff but imo can be pricey[flag mirrors, chrome handles]

try also ebay.de

kr conversion, have a look on www.mk1golf.org

it will list all the parts you need

is it a 4 speed gti?

well done Jamie

join up on mk1oc and become a member... it'll cost you £15 but it is well worth it... you save loads from GSF & Crazy Quiffs etc with discounts

It's a 4 speed 1.5 GLS.

Thanks for the welcome! I've joined up with mk1OC and there's tons of information there. Just got to find time to sit down and trawl through it all. Along with the massive amount of history for the car, there's a load of stuff printed out about doing the KR conversion :)

I hadn't thought about German ebay! I'll have a gander :)

Isn't it just! Shame I didn't take those photos.. the seller is a semi-pro photographer who has a fetish for film ;)

Unfortunately it may look amazing in those photos, but it's a bit tatty. Needs a lot of work and possibly a full respray as it's had an outside only respray..

But luckily, the rest of the metal (visible inside, etc.) matches the lovely all brown interior!

Anyone know what the plastic door handles that are painted chrome are like? Will they look sh*t after a couple of months? I can't afford £150+ for a full set of real chrome handles!!

i woudnt get plastic handles mate they are used all the time and i cant see the plastic standing up too long, and the plastic will suffer from break down from uv rays and eventually become brittle
