help please........***engine started ( ye ha ) **
« on: 31 October 2009, 16:39 »
i bought a project mk2 gti several months ago........it had a duff/blown engine when i bought it,so never really knew if all was well before installing new engine, again an 8v pb ...

i got the second hand engine off a forum guy,and was advised it was a really good runner, although never heard it running...

it has been installed over the last few weeks, and was ready to fire up today.......it has spark, and fuel going to the injector rail..no fuses are blown .....

turning over really nice, and occasionally a fart/back pressure blow from the engine although it wont start...

i also fitted a new knock sensor..this engine didnt have one fitted when i got it,so dont know if it had one originally.

only problem i had before installing was the little brass tube on the rear of the throttle body was snapped,so i changed over the throttle body from my old engine....could this make a difference?

could it be timing?..would it be worth moving the distributor while turning it over, would it have to be re timed for a different ecu?.....don't think its too far away, any ideas and points in the right direction would be lovely....

is this where you wish you had rubjohnys mobile no?????

please help as the missus is laughin at me and " ma auld banger ",and shes lookin for any excuse to get the garage back...

Double check, fuel delivery, healthy battery, all earths are cleaned and secure, that you have a spark, timing marks line up, dizzy is in the correct position, plug leads are in the correct order, and a new set of plugs fitted, if your confident that all the above are correct, and your not just guessing they are, then it may be something as simple that it needs to be tow started..

thanks thom....fuel at the rail, battery good, earths ( need to double check ) have spark..........need to check timing marks.....and then dissy.......plugs new...my thoughts where leaning towards the knock sensor....could i be wrong in thinking that if it didnt have one fitted previously the timing would be out?..my concern is doing the timing when the engine isnt running at all.....

Is it a backfire in the intake?

Sounds like the cam timing is out or dizzy is miles out, or you've got the firing order wrong.

Is it a backfire in the intake? You got your HT leads in the right order?

its not so much a back fire, more a exhaust pressure noise.......

firing order good........

ben, iknow this is fairly simple fix,but i just cant get the finger onto it...

if everyone throws ideas, one will work..

thanks.

the engine has been sat for best part of 10 months.........

would that be long enough for the tappits to dry out?

Tow starting is the way to go, oil pump will work far more efficiently... dont worry about it
