Sound Generator
« on: 31 October 2009, 00:38 »
I’ve just done a quick forum search on this, some stuff came up but has anyone got some info on where or what it is, how it works (does it use speakers?)

This threw me, so is the engine noise is fake in the cabin? Does this mean it sounds meaty in the cabin, but like a normal golf on the outside?

Can anyone shine any light the Sound Generator?

Only that when I asked my dealer if they could be removed, I was told no, it would invalidate my warranty.

did a fair bit of googleing yesterday evening, couldn't find any real info appart from it's electronic and manipulates sound frequencies to amplify selected sounds from the engine or exhausts, so you get the more base sounds in the cabin. Sounded good on the test drive but dealer didn't know how it works \ where it is etc.
Just has that fake feeling but hey it sounded good!  (I guess it's best not to mention it to any of your mates if they comment the car sounds lol)

Is it deffinately electronicly generated?  I would have thought that perhaps at certain engine speeds and loads a flap (could well be electronically controlled) would open to allow more noise into the cabin or something to that effect  :undecided:

I thought it was only the GTD that did this but I must be wrong.

From what I gather its not actually generating anysound, just amplifying the sound into the cabin a little more than previously. Definately nothing done electronically, and from my experience sounds just like a system used in the Focus ST and VXR... only difference being VW chose to highlight it and give it a name. Sounds a similar mechanism to the flapper mod on r32's. :nerd:

yep that's the way I read it after reading the reviews in google, seems not to generate "fake engine sounds" but clean up and amplify good ones. Also google came up with something about US Mk5 golfs having a pipe to channel sound into the cabin??? lol

I wonder if it works like Bose headphones (on some airlines you're headsets for films \ sleep etc  are electronic noise canceling).

Some extacts from google searches & reviews:
"VW's engineers have fitted an electronic sound generator that amplifies specific engine frequencies into the cabin"

Also seems to be in press releases "A GTI that delivers audible dynamics with a sound generator and new exhaust system design (two tailpipes, one left and one right). A GTI that successfully transfers the tradition of the original version to the future."

Still got a bit of a buz from last weeks test drive, what ever it was sounded good, roll on 1st march!

The sound pipe runs behind the firewall to create a nice vrooom vrrooommm inside the cabin for the GTI.

if it is installed on your GTI, you should see the pipe running behind the firewall at the red arrow on top.

You can see the noise pipe clearly in this picture running behind the firewall.

Some people block the pipe or reroute it using the A3 pn for the TSI engine.
