FANBELT!?!? Which one is it?
« on: 30 October 2009, 11:19 »
Having a bloody nightmare locating the correct fanbelt for my MK3 16v ABF (the one that goes on the alternator etc) ... need to have my car serviced big time, Alternator, Oil/Filter, Rear Axle Bushes and now need the Fanbelt as it has a split on it, but no motor factors have provided me with the correct one their all too small ... even tried GSF and the guy was confused to which one it was, fair play for his honesty ...

Has any one purchased one online and have had it fitted? if so, please provide me with a link or give the part no: so I can get one asap ...

EDIT: My car doesn't have A/C

Euro Car parts or GSF should be able to give you the correct one by using your car reg.

And it's not a fan belt but an Aux Belt  .

So Aux Belt is the correct definition for it? nice one m8.

Ill try Euro Car Parts as GSF weren't sure ... don't want to buy and then return, ive done that in the past and ended up having an arguement as the guy insisted it was the correct part when it wasn't ... dunno if he still works their or not but yeah ...

Any idea how difficult it is to change the Aux Belt & the alternator? looks quite easy, any one have a HOW TO? i'd rather save money attempting it myself ...

Thanks in advance ...

there are 2 sizes for the ABF engine without A/C:
92-95 = 976mm
96-97 = 1038mm

you'll also want the power steering belt I'd imagine.  PAS belt has to come off before the aux belt, 3 bolts need to be cracked loose so you can slacken the PAS pump.  Theres a big one thru the pivot bracket, 15mm iirc, and 2x 13mm bolts. one thru the middle of a toothed nut thingy, and the other is on the back face near the bottom, it goes thru a sloted hole in the alternator bracket, will become obvious when you look.

Once thats off, the alt belt is replaced by twisting the tensioner pulley arm till the belt comes off, there are no other bolts to loosen.  what i do is hook a large adjustible spanner over the tensioner arm, and use that to lever against the tensioner spring.

alternator itself is held on with 2 bolts, easy.

Sound mate, so obv once the belts off its just a matter off taking off the alternator (disconnect the battery first?) and replacing it with the new one and then putting it all back together?

EDIT: And is the power steering belt, just one size?

Not since the old days when it used to drive the cooling fan as well.
