What Car had a Focus RS for a longterm test and it went through 4 sets of front tyres in 12k

The golf R is a rebadged S3 with a stupid price tag (i thought the mk6 was cheaper to build?)

No way im going for the R, its ont even much of an upgrade over the R32 (not £15k's worth at least!)

You are entitled to your opinion - even if it's wrong.

I remember exactly the same thread on another forum when the Mk5 R32 came out. Only 10bhp more than the Mk4... £30K+ for a just a Golf... what a rip off... they'll never sell any... blah blah blah...

But, then again, I'm biased.

Its not the power, its the delivery and feel of a V6 accompanied by the noise the makes it 'better' than the GTI. The R20 is designed to just be quicker.

I highly advise you go and test an S3, possibly the most soulless car ive ever driven!

What car were claiming their first Golf R review this week (4 Nov) - whilst I don't rate What Car as it is more of a consumer mag than an enthusiasts one, it'll be interesting to read what they say.

Ive never driven one so wont comment on that but on paper the S3 is just an ED30 with a bigger intercooler, a different map, some other minor engine mods and 4WD. The ED30 has plenty of "soul" so surely more power and 4WD should only enhance it, would love to drive at some point but don't know anyone at with one

Do you really think they will be faster round a track than the Golf?? I think the difference in power and the clever diff in the focus will make up for it.

You do know the R is 4wd Khare? It'll wipe it's bum with the RS round a track. The RS is all shouty mouth and no trousers. I'll admit for the money it's not a bad car for driving like a hooligan but the running costs will probably bring it up to Golf R money over a few years.

Hard to explain. You just get out and dont feel anything, doesnt emote you in any way. Its bloody quick, just boring!
