MFA Display
« on: 29 October 2009, 15:00 »
Hi all
Im sure this question has been asked many times but i cant seem to find an answer anywhere??
On my multi function display, all works except Miles, MPH, and MPG. All 3 only show ---. I have tried removing the fuse for 30 min, no luck, and have also had a look at the vacume pipe behind the clocks, seems fine. Any ideas??? Please help.
I also have a problem with the heating inside the car, i have removed the valves in the engine bay, i have put a new water pump and thermostat on, put on a new cap and flushed out the system about 3 times and still only getting marginally warm air coming out, again, any ideas??
Thanks, all advice and help will be greatly appreciated.

all 3 of those settings rely on the speedo sensor, if that or the pcb connection are broken that would explain why all 3 settings do not work.  speedo sensor is screwed to the back of the speedo, so you'll have to take the clocks out to check it, thats where I would start the investigation :)

as for the heating, it could be the matrix is clogged up :(

Hi John
Thanks for that, i will start off with checking the speedo sensor. How will i tell if it is the problem?
With regards to the heater matrix, i put a hose pipe on both pipes in the engine bay where the valves go and from both sides the water flows freely through?
Cheers

I was in your situation and replaced the matrix - problem solved. I hadn't checked whether the old matrix was flowing freely though, so mine could have been a blocked matrix.

I'm guessing the engine is getting up to temperature okay?

How about the heating controls - is the mixer slider working okay, and operating the flap on the heaterbox correctly (you'll hear it)?

The heater matrix is definatly flowing freely. The engine temp is fine, whilst driving around town it gets pretty hot (goes up to about 3/4 then fan kicks in and it comes back to half) it keeps doing that until i get a bit of a run and then it comes down to just above 1/4..
I must say that when the engine temp is at 3/4 on the guage, the air coming out of the vents is almost where i would like it to be then when the temp comes down so does the temp of the air?
all the controls and flaps are working fine. When you have the flap to cold, the air is cold, when you move it over to hot, it is a little bit warmer, so the flap is workig (and like you say, you can hear it).
Cheers mate

Hmmm..the temperature reading seems a little low - especially considering that you've replaced the thermostat (may be worth doing the bottom pipe test just in case the replacement is faulty).

I'd be inclined to discount the possibility that the clocks or temperature sender is faulty, as the fan kicks in on 3/4 which sounds right. Have you checked for airlocks? Low water/airlocks can lead to a cold heater and low temperature on the gauge.

There doesnt seem to be an airlock but the system is not pressurising, even at high temp the pipes are still soft?

have a read thru the coolant guide, should help you get to the bottom of that problem.
as for speedo sensor, only way to know is to fit another! unless its obviously broken in some way or tyou can see the PCB has pulled out of it or is damaged. 1st step I'd be doing is popping the senor out and checkign the connections inside, give them a clean and make sure the prongs make good contact with the PCB. As I say, check for obvious damage to the PCB. if non of that fixes it, probably going to need another set of clocks :(

could try swapping in another speedo ifyou have one to hand also.
