sloppy gears on my mk1 wreck
« on: 29 September 2004, 21:41 »
Hello people I have just got my dearly beloved mk1 back from the mechanic and whilst I'm really pleased with all of the work he has done I do have one problem.
It's a problem that I think is quite commen with the mk1s of this age (1982 1.6) the gear changes feel really sloppy. as sloppy as wayne roonys favourite tart.
I've seen a few kits on the market that have replacement bushes and stuff (can you see my levels of mechanical knowledge?) do these work? if so wheres the best place to get them from and can they be fitted by the novice?
any help would be very gratefully received.

cheers

dave

Dave - easy one to sort!

Buy from someone like GSF the gearlinkage bush kit, linkage rods (two rods with plastic cup end/clips) and fitting is a straight forward swap - even for a novice! It's just a case of taking off old and fitting new - just need to be a little double-jointed but it's not too bad.

Second stage if this doesn't completely sort the problem would be the relay lever (at bottom of gear lever is connected long rod, at end of this is like a metal square that has the relay lever in it - it's just a metal plate with a rubber ball on the end.) Think they're about ?13 from VW from memory. Finally, you can look to change lever bearing plate at bottom of gearchange lever. This is priciest option at about ?33 from VW so perhaps do the rest first?!

Overall, DONT buy the bits off eBay cos you'll get ripped off!!

Hope this helps Dave

cheers hairyarse

I will have a look into getting all of that sorted out as soon as I get my new pay cheque next month.
Thanks for the ebay tip I was looking to get something off there last week but I held back to ask on the forum for advice first.
the way I'm going through the cart is everything I can realy afford to replace I will so when I get the beast up and running she will have the best ride possible.
Thanks again.

No worries David - let us know how you get on!

Try also GPC in Luton for parts if close to you. As general rule with eBay, any parts listed for your Golf - esp. new ones are likely available elsewhere - and cheaper!

Prime example,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9889&item=2489793725&rd=1 :o

You can buy these from GSF for something like 60p each!!

I guess fair do's to the chap who sold em but watch out all the same

You have been warned!! lol

Not so long ago oneBay someone was selling a 'Dehydrated bottle of water!'

It was basically an empty water bottle cos he had drunk the contents. He was quite open about this but still the bidding was at about ?11!!!! :o
