If this is of use by all means print and use it, something I collated when looking @ the Golfs to buy...

Thanks for this - very useful. I've got my MK3 16V at the moment and as I don't use it much I'm prepared to hold off until the right one comes my way.

Make sure you get a decent one with low mileage. Mine had 62,000 on it but still needed bits doing. They do have loads of silly things that go wrong.
Golf SOLD. Replaced with a Yamaha Raptor 660 quad and loving it. This will be replaced in August with a Raptor 700. Sold the quad now got a Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 and its the nuts.

I´ve got a 115 GTi 03 plate 35k. It´s pretty much immaculate inside and out. I´m fairly happy with it but I´m starting to think maybe a 1.8t is the way forward. Has anybody owned both? Just how much difference is there?

115bhp vs 150bhp - thats 35bhp difference before you've even remapped it

basically the difference is like night and day, chalk and cheese...............

but to answer the OP's question - no you shouldn't get one

really dont bother with the 2.0gti, it really shouldn't even deserve the gti badge its so feckin slow!!

I bought my 1.8t back in april ish, had 2 owners from new, 99 T plate, 87k on the clock and few niggles, water leak due to broken pollen filter cover, the rear axle bushes are going which vw say is normal for a car of this milage, now have a leak on the front passenger A post, not sure wether its the windscreen seal fecked or the door seal. and got it for a steal at £1,895.  can honestly say this car is what driving is about, even going to the supermarket is fun. cant recommend getting one enough. good luck hunting, hope you get a good un!

After almost 18 months I'm just revisiting my thoughts of buying a 1.8t. I've currently got a 98 2.0 16v golf but have always liked the look of the mk4 and the prices seem to be really good at the moment. I'd be looking at around a 2000 reg but just wondered about the 150bhp and 180bhp models. Is there are huge amount of difference and therefore fore should I try to get the 180. My current golf is still running great but I just fancy a change.

Also be interested to know about MPG. I currently get around 36 to the gallon.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
