cutting out and now dead

I my car had let me down for the first time Sunday. Basicly bit of history it had a complete service back in june when I got her. I had her chip about 5weeks ago which was fine. But last Sunday she started fine in the morning and driving fine ... late Sunday I was driving in third gear at about 3k just touching/tickereling the throtal to keep it a 3k and she just cut out I turn the key 2times and she started and was away. My car ushaly starts first time. Then was fine driving again,then a bit later I was in third at about 3k and she died again but was still rolling with my foot on the gas and she fired up and away I went. Stopped at a mate for 30mins started her up first tim drove about 800yards and she died and won't start at all. What could this be? Could it be the chip or ecu? Have had no time to look to see if there's a spark or fuel getting in her. Any ideas or tips before I try fix her at the weekend/ thanks luke

my gut feeling is perhaps a dodgy ignition switch

Right can that be tested and where about is that it ant the key is it? It turns over and I have the ignition lights,just don't start. I throught maybe fuel pump coils coil pack leads dizzy cap .... could be anything lol I'll have to see if there's fuel or a spark

So it's trying to crank over but not 'taking'?

CHeck the ECU plug is fully plugged in. If you swapped the chip recently yo may not have pushed it all the way home when refitting the plug.

Check that the cam belt has not slipped.

Would my gti have a immobilizer as standered? All I got with my car was a 2keys. Well if the cambelt sliped wouldn't the piston hit the valves? And would it start but be missing?..... well it was as if t turned the key off. Still had ignition lights. But the rev counter just droped like flat lined but the engine was still going over but was not firing or running as I was rolling and still in gear if that's any help
